The Tswaing Agri-City Mega Project is a mixed land-use development that is multi funded, by the Gauteng Department of Human Settlements, amongst others.
It is based on the concept of sustainable development and it integrates agricultural production and agri-processing. There are 700 hectares allocated to farming. The development is located in the City of Tshwane, north of Soshanguve. It is envisaged that 12,300 housing units will be built on 415 hectares of land.
The key objectives of this development are to:
- Develop sustainable human settlements
- Create an economically integrated community
- Stimulate economic activity through agriculture
- Empower the community through training and skills development
The Tswaing Agri-City Mega Project will have agricultural farm lands as well as an agri-processing facility. The principle of sustainability will be supported by modern farming techniques used internationally that have minimal water requirements, high yields in small areas of land, require the use of less pesticides and thereby being less harmful to people and the environment.
The Tswaing development will set the trend in terms of world class smart cities and integration of economic activity and residential areas. Having the agricultural hub as the anchor economic activity, it will attract other businesses to invest and set up operations in Tswaing, this will boost economic activity and create thousands of new employment opportunities. A market is also planned with Tswaing to sell the products harvested in the agricultural area.
With an estimated 12,300 housing households, the development will require schools, health and recreational facilities, retail and commercial properties.
